Informatica – Legacy to AI Ready in the Cloud | April Good Bits

April 30, 2024

Over the past few weeks, the ‘on-again, off-again’ news of Salesforce’s intent to acquire Informatica caused a stir in the tech world. While Salesforce seems to have abandoned acquisition talks, the interest to acquire Informatica underscores the need for solid data management solutions to drive the evolution of analytics and artificial intelligence (AI).

Informatica PowerCenter and Legacy ETL

With its widely used ETL tool, PowerCenter, Informatica has been a long-time leader in data integration for enterprises. PowerCenter has provided a powerful data integration capability with easy-to-use drag-and-drop user interface and compatibility with Informatica’s data quality and master data management (MDM) tools.

PowerCenter came to prominence along with other enterprise-class ETL tools like DataStage, Ab Initio and SSIS, to name a few. With the rise of cloud computing and acceleration of data modernization with hyperscalers – Microsoft Azure, AWS and Google Cloud – these ETL tools have become legacy technology that presents challenges of scaling in the cloud to meet the latest analytics and AI needs.

IDMC and the Modern Data & AI Platform

To accommodate the shift to cloud, data integration platforms either need to adapt or face extinction. Informatica has recognized this need by investing in its Intelligent Data Management Cloud (IDMC) which combines its data integration capability with its data quality, data governance, MDM and other tools within a unified data platform.

As a result, PowerCenter is being phased out and indeed Informatica has scheduled end of support for versions of the tool as it focuses on customers adopting IDMC. In fact, the entire industry is shifting away from legacy, on-premise ETL tools to cloud-native data integration services offered as part of modern data and AI platforms.

ETL Modernization for PowerCenter and Other Tools

To facilitate the shift from PowerCenter to IDMC, Informatica developed its Migration Factory tookit that certified Platinum Partners like Bitwise can use to help customers streamline migration. While automation tools help accelerate ETL modernization projects, migrating on-premise ETL to the cloud can be fraught with a myriad of unforeseen challenges.

With 15 years of experience in delivering ETL modernization projects, Bitwise has worked through the most difficult challenges encountered when migrating ETL from one tool to another. Whether migrating ETL to IDMC from PowerCenter or other data integration tools like DataStage, SSIS or Ab Initio, Bitwise offers the right combination of experience, automation and best practices to ensure a successful, risk-free migration.
